20 Canadian Veterans Join Business Boot Camp to Become Entrepreneurs

The unique program helped transitioning members of the Canadian Armed Forces start their own businesses.

HALIFAX, June 12, 2023 – Prince’s Trust Canada celebrates the completion of its Operation Entrepreneur Boot Camp for transitioning Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members in Halifax. Running from June 4-11, 2023, the program helped 20 military members embark upon their second careers to start their own businesses.

The 2023 Halifax Operation Entrepreneur Boot Camp was organized by Prince’s Trust Canada and hosted at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Management for the ninth year and featured renowned professors who taught the Veterans essential business skills like accounting and finance, marketing, and business modelling tools.

Bill Foster, Assistant Professor of Strategic Management at the university said, “Dalhousie University, and the Faculty of Management in particular, is proud to continue to partner with the Prince’s Trust Canada in support of CAF Veterans. We recognize the unique skills they have acquired through their years of dedicated service and enjoyed working with them to develop complementary skills to succeed in business."

One the Veteran participants, Josh Jackson, CEO of Lit Lighting LTD said, “Operation Entrepreneur has been extremely beneficial for my small business. It was amazing to interact with leaders in business and learn that the whole community wants you to succeed. I am extremely grateful to Prince’s Trust Canada and his Majesty for starting this amazing program.”

74 percent of our boot camp participants are medically released, with many having spent most, if not their entire careers, in service. Operation Entrepreneur was launched in 2012 to address a gap in opportunities for Veterans to develop their entrepreneurial spirit and knowledge while building their network.

“39% of Veterans who left the CAF reported their transition to post-service life as being difficult,1” said Farah Mohamed, CEO of Prince’s Trust Canada, “Our organization comes in during this challenging time and has helped over 6,000 Canadian Veterans find a meaningful, new mission in life through entrepreneurship by building on the skills they developed in service, gaining new ones, and forming new networks.”
