Prince's Trust Canada and the University of Regina host entrepreneurship "boot camp" to help veterans start businesses
REGINA, SK: Prince’s Trust Canada, along with the University of Regina, Enactus Regina and the Paul J. Hill School of Business, are pleased to again be delivering their annual business boot camp.
The boot camp, part of the Prince’s Trust Canada’s Operation Entrepreneur program, provides veterans and transitioning members of the Canadian Armed Forces with a crash course in business essentials including; marketing, finance, staffing, accounting and other need-to-know business practices. Its goal is to help military members launch their second careers as entrepreneurs while creating positive economic and social impact in their communities.
“The Hill School of Business is very proud to partner with Enactus and Prince’s Trust Canada to provide veterans and transitioning members of the Canadian Armed Forces with the business skills and knowledge they need to launch their second career as entrepreneurs,” says Hill and Levene Schools’ Dean Dr. Gina Grandy. “These armed forces members have devoted much of their lives to serving this country and they are eager to continue doing so by creating new economic opportunities in their communities. We are honoured to be able to support them.”
The boot camp, held exclusively online this year, began on August 13 and end August 27. A virtual graduation ceremony celebrating the participants’ completion of the program, will take place August 27, with the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, The Honourable Russ Mirasty attending.
Participants Moe and Nancy Galarneau, owners of Prairie Dawg Winery
The participants in this year’s boot camp come from across Canada and start the program with a developed business idea. Moe Galarneau, a Saskatchewan native who served 28 years in the Armed Forces, and his wife, Nancy, who served 14 years, are participating in the boot camp together. They plan on starting a boutique winery in the Ottawa region. “When we found out we were going, we were excited to work with Operation Entrepreneur and the University of Regina. We’ve been able to network, receive valuable information and advice that will help us in the development of our new adventure,” said Galarneau. “This is an invaluable experience and one that every Veteran entrepreneur needs to do.”
Participants received live virtual classroom instruction, participated in online networking events and mentorship forums, and benefited from one-on-one coaching from Hill and Levene faculty members. Professors from the Hill School of Business volunteer their time and expertise to not only teach, but also work directly with participants to help craft their business development plans.
This is the eighth time that Enactus Regina and the Hill School of Business have hosted the program, and the first time it has been run virtually. In total, more than 120 participants have completed the program. Graduates have gone on to launch businesses ranging from food trucks to home inspections, artisan bakeries to kite-surfing tours.
